Pride Month

Pride Month is celebrated every year in June, commemorating the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City, which marked a turning point in the LGBTQ+ rights movement.

The purpose of this important month is to honour the struggles and achievements of the LGBTQ+ community, celebrate its diversity, and promote equality and acceptance for all.

It is important to celebrate Pride Month because despite significant progress, discrimination and violence against LGBTQ+ individuals still exist, and many continue to face challenges related to their sexual orientation and gender identity. Awareness over the month of June serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and as a call to action for individuals and organisations to support the LGBTQ+ community.

Organisations can get involved in several ways:

  • They can sponsor or participate in local Pride events
  • Offer support to LGBTQ+ employees
  • Make a commitment to diversity and inclusion in hiring practices and workplace culture
  • Organisations can donate to LGBTQ+ advocacy groups or launch their own initiatives to support the community

It is important for organisations to demonstrate a commitment to equality and acceptance, not just during Pride Month, but year-round.
